1-28-21 THOUGHTS

Two Greek words are translated  SOBER.  NEPHO is literally it is the opposite of intoxicated. The Greek dictionary uses the word FUZZINESS when speaking of the FIGURATIVE SOBER and notes it is the opposite of every kind of fuzziness.  It’s meaning then is 1) to be sober, to be calm and collected in spirit  2) to be temperate, dispassionate, circumspect.
Below it is translated  “Sober, sound mind, temperate, sensible,”
2Cor 5:13   For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are of sound mind, it is for you.
1Thes 5:6    so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.
1Thes 5:8   But since we are of the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet, the hope of salvation.
1Tim 3:11  Women must likewise be dignified, not malicious gossips, but temperate, faithful in all things.
2Tim 4:5   But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
1Pet 1:13    Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
1Pet 4:7    The end of all things is near; therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.
1Pet 5:8    Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

The Greek word SOPHRON is used in the following passages.  It means,  to be of sound mind,
to be in one’s right mind,  to exercise self control,  to put a moderate estimate upon one’s self, think of one’s self soberly,  to curb one’s passions
1Tim 3:2  An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,
Titus 1:8   but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled,
Titus 2:2  Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance.
Titus 2:5-6   [to be] sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored. 6 Likewise urge the young men to be sensible;

The sober idea is a behavioral characteristic.
It is who I am to be, and how I ought to act.  I am reminded that I am also told to “rejoice in the Lord”.  It is beautiful when both of these characteristics are in the same person at the same time!

My Prayer:
Lord help us to be of sober spirit that we may combat our adversary the devil.  Keep us serious about our eternity.  Help us have a certain dignity and soundness in the faith to serve you with might and power.  May Christ be our life.            In Jesus name               Amen
